You Need Medical Help Overseas – Will The Government Help?
The main issue about getting medical help overseas is what you can get and how much would it cost you. In many socialized countries they will not provide you with full care, and sometimes not at all. As Americans we like to complain about what we have, but in fact we have it better than other countries, and becoming sick while traveling abroad could really open your eyes. This is where travel insurance comes in.
Shop around for cheap travel insurance plans. You can get several types of plans, such as senior citizen travel insurance. This will be a backup from whatever other health care option you may have.
Know where the US Embassy or consular office is located when you do travel out of the country so that in the event something happens, you could go to them and know what to do. People sometimes have this misconception that an Embassy is merely there to provide legal advice or some sort of protection which isn’t what they really do. What they can actually give you is a list of contacts that would be of great help for you in recovering lost baggage or goods or getting the proper medical care that you need.
Always take care of your passport and make sure not to lose it when traveling abroad. If your passport has been stolen, you will want to find the U.S. Embassy office immediately so they can help you get a new one so you can follow your traveling schedule as planned. The passport is a must, so be mindful of this and that its a time sensitive issue.
Worse would be getting imprisoned overseas. I can’t think of getting into prison, how much more in a foreign prison. In a lot of countries, fighting back is actually a crime. While it may not seem sensible to us, we have to keep in mind that we are a very free country.
